Designing a Dreamy Primary Suite: Your Ultimate Guide to a Luxurious Retreat

Hi, guys!! It's me, Hanna, and I'm back with my usual home decor shenanigans. But honestly, I'm leaving lots of tips for creating your dream bedroom and I hope this helps you create the staycation space you NEED. Yes, I said need. Because your bedroom should be more than just a place to sleep—it should be a sanctuary that encourages you to relax and rejuvenate, because let's face it-- We can have some looongggg days, am I right?! Oof. Grateful...but oof!
Whether you’re looking to create a cozy retreat or a luxurious feeling escape (from reality lol), thoughtful and intentional design choices can make all the difference. Ok, now let's just get to the point.
1. Choose a Calming Color Palette
I alwaysssss start with a color palette! Color has a profound impact on mood, and the right hues can set the tone for your entire design. Opt for soft, neutral shades like beige, ivory, and warm grays, or go for cool blues and muted greens, which evoke a sense of serenity. If you love deeper tones, consider rich earthy shades like terracotta or deep olive for a cozy yet grounding atmosphere. I'm honestly loving my muted colors these days.
2. Invest in Quality Bedding
Your bed is the focal point of the room, so prioritize comfort by investing in high-quality bedding. Look for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, and layer with plush pillows and cozy throws. A good mattress and supportive pillows are essential for restful sleep, so choose wisely. A girl needssss her beauty rest.
3. Layer Your Lighting
Is it just me or is the argument of the century between husband and wife about lighting.... LOL. I hateeee the "big" light. And I hate the super bright, "lab looking" lights too, but my husband loves it. Gross.
Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the cozy mood in your bedroom oasis. Incorporate a mix of light sources, including overhead fixtures, bedside lamps, and dimmable sconces (This may be the compromise you need in your marriage. Haha). Soft, warm lighting helps create a cozy atmosphere, and you can complete this look with some light-filtering, pull-down roman shades and curtains to polish it off!
4. Declutter and Simplify
A clutter-free space promotes relaxation, so embrace minimalism when designing your bedroom. As much as I like getting new things (this is a different conversation, and potentially also another marriage argument of the century... no comment.), I have really tried to keep this in mind because, I mean, cute stuff is great... Until you need to store it all and you get overwhelmed with the clutter. Keep surfaces clear of unnecessary items (no dirty clothes on the floor, receipts or change on the dresser, etc), invest in storage solutions that also happen to be pretty (woven baskets, storage ottomans, etc), and opt for multifunctional furniture to maintain a clean and serene environment. Got it?! Got it.
5. Bring Nature Indoors
Yeppppp. Every space needs a plant. A plant, a tree, something with some green life- (Can you tell I'm in the middle of a Michigan winter?? Lol) Not only do they add some softness and muted color to a space, but if you can keep real ones alive, those ones actually improve air quality! If you're up for the challenge. I'm insistent on becoming a green thumb at some point, so in the meantime, I'll keep trying. Low-maintenance options like snake plants, peace lilies, and pothos bring a touch of greenery while requiring a little less care. A small vase of fresh flowers can also add a refreshing touch- My favorite touch in the spring and summer.
6. Incorporate Soft Textures
Layering textures creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, and is quite honestly necessary in completing each and every space in a home. Consider a area rug with some texture underfoot, soft drapes/woven shades, and upholstered furniture to add depth and comfort. Cashmere throw blankets and throw pillows of different fabrics can also enhance the coziness factor. P.S. I like to mix my throw pillow styles, sizes, patterns, and textures.
7. Personalize Your Space
Your bedroom should reflect your personality and preferences. Incorporate meaningful decor pieces, such as framed artwork, cherished photographs, or sentimental objects. I'm actually considering adding a copy of mine and my husband's wedding vows in a pretty frame for an extra touch of "personal". Just be mindful to keep the decor minimal to maintain a sense of calm and not overwhelm the eye.
8. Use Aromatherapy
A comfortable armchair with a small side table for books, a scented candle (in our house, we can only burn clean candles per allergies- linking my favorite clean candles below this...) or a diffuser with essential oils can really help set the tone for a space. I find that a good, clean scent (that isn't too overwhelming) helps me to fall asleep. And there's just something that feels so nice about ending your long day in your cozy, clean, nice-smelling room that just hits the spot.

9. Embrace (& actually enforce- a reminder to me..) a Tech-Free Zone
To create a true sanctuary from the stressors of everyday life, minimize your technology & blue light. Keep work-related devices out of the bedroom and establish a calming bedtime routine to signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. I still struggle with this one because I'm a big "watch TV in bed gal", but it's a goal I'm working toward! Especially since my husband and I are so busy that there are some days we don't even see each other until we lay down to go to bed together.
SO! I hope you're running off to make small & subtle, relaxing changes to your bedroom space. By incorporating these design principles, you can transform your bedroom into a literal retreat. Whether you prefer a transitional aesthetic or a plush, luxurious vibe, the key is to create a space that feels both functional and refreshing. I promise you won't regret it!

Xoxo,
